One Dimensional
Traditional organizational structures are hierarchical as
shown in the left top image. Decisions are made at various
levels of the command chain. Almost everyone that
has been employed has been subject to this type in one form or
another.
Two Dimensional
Project management organizations use the matrix structure (right
top) with one dimension showing tasks from a project work break
down structure and the other dimension showing the
organizational functions. It is an effective means
of coordinating resources from various chains of command to
satisfy the needs of specific tasks in project.
Three Dimensional
The diagram on the lower left depicts the 3 dimensional nature
of company which focuses on product, market and function.
In the 1990s when I on a consulting project for The Chase
Manhattan Bank the CEO looked at them as a three dimensional
organization.
N-Dimensional As I have thought about
organizations I feel that in some cases it would be better to
think of them as N-Dimensional. "bestChoices" is an
organization of this type. See 4B for
more information on this. Since it is impractical to think
of all dimensions at one time only focus on those that are
critical to the task at hand. Using the technique of
multidimensional analysis null those that those of lesser
importance to the task at hand. |
