Here the Business is expanded to show four critical components of a
successful Business: Marketplace, Production, Development and Research.
A way to visualize this is to look at a room with four corners with one
of these components in each corner; the Business is in the center of the
room and manages the interaction of these components toward the
objective of providing the services and wares that meet the needs of the
Marketplace.
The Marketplace dictates the services or wares that are to be provided
by Production/Service component. The Development component
engineers and builds prototypes that meet the needs of upcoming
Marketplace needs. Research creates ideas, concepts, techniques,
proof of principals, technologies options that will be useful to
Development in designing and building wares and services applicable to
the Marketplace.
The
NC Research Campus is an excellent example of the Research
Domain. It is also a great example of out of the box
thinking; David Murdock has an adage "To do the Impossible, you
have to see the Invisible."
